*** EFFICIENCY / CURRENCY UNITS ***
Efficiency/Currency units, sometimes referred to as E/C units, serve a
twofold purpose in STARLORD. First they are used to determine when a
ship commander has gained enough experience to be promoted to the next
higher rank, and secondly they are used to transact with planets and
bases to effect repairs and replenish the ship.
During the mission in which they are acquired these units are referred
to as currency units because they are used to purchase needed services
and supplies. Once the game is ended, however, the current units are
added to an overall figure to be used in determining the commander's
efficiency rating. For this reason, a commander is never promoted
while the game is in progress. All promotions take place at the be-
ginning of the game.
E/C units are gained by successful attacks on enemies. For each point
an enemy is damaged a point is gained to the E/C total. Efficiency
bonuses are granted for capturing an enemy, destroying an enemy, de-
feating an enemy so that he surrenders, and when a towed vessel is
delivered to an Imperial Installation.
The only time Efficiency Units (those added to the total at the end
of the mission) may be used as currency is at the beginning of the
game when the Commander may use these to refit destroyed ships. The
standard fee for this service is 2500 E/C units. If these units are
used in this fashion and not replaced during the game, the Commander
may be demoted for demonstrated incompetence. Also, if the ship you
have chosen to command is destroyed when the game commences, a heavy
E/C penalty may be imposed.
